Healthcare & Medical Internships
At Volunteer Travel Experience, we believe that every healthcare placement should be a meaningful learning experience. Wheter you are a nursing, medical, physiotherapy or healthcare student, you will have the opportunity to experience the Tanzanian healthcare system while working alongside dedicated local professional.
Mount Meru Hospital
Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital is the largest government referral hospital in the Arusha region. As one of Northern Tanzania's major referral centres, the hospital receives patients from across the region and provides a wide range of specialised medical services.
Because of its high patient volume, volutneers and interns gain valuable insight into emergency care, internal medicine, surgery paediatrics, maternity care and many other departments. It is an excellent placement for those looking to experience a busy public healthcare environment and learn how healthcare is delivered in a resource-limited setting.
This placement is ideal for students and other healthcare professionals, who enjoy variety, teamwork and gaining experience in a fast-paced hospital.
Location: City Centre, Arusha.
Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC)
Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC) is one of northern Tanzania's leading referral hospitals. The hospital combines modern medical services with compassionate acre and serves patients from across Tanzania and neighbouring countries.
ALMC offers specialised departments including emergency medicine, surgery, intensive care, paediactrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, mental health and dialysis services.
As a volunteer of intern you can work alongside doctors, nurses and specialists during ward rounds and clinical care. Observe and assist across departments.

Kaloleni Health Centre
Kaloleni Hospital offers volunteers the opportunity to experience healthcare within a local community hospital. Here, you will work closely with healthcare professionals who provide essential medical services to patients from the surrounding communities.
Because of the close interaction between staff and patients, volunteers often gain a deeper understanding of community healthcare, preventive medicine and the challenges faced by local healthcare providers.
This placement provides an authentic insight into everyday healthcare in Tanzania while allowing volunteers to become part of a welcoming and supportive team.

St Elisabeth hospital
St. Elizabeth Hospital is a faith-based hospital that has served the Arusha community for many years. The hospital is known for delivering compassionate and accessible healthcare while maintaining a strong focus on patient dignity and respect.
Volunteers may observe and learn within several departments depending on their educational background, experience and the hospital's current needs.
The friendly working environment and commitment to quality care make St. Elizabeth Hospital an excellent place to develop both professional and cultural skills.

Tengeru Hospital
Located just outside Arusha, Tengeru Hospital serves both urban and rural communities. The hospital provides a broad range of healthcare services and allows volunteers to experience the realities of healthcare in a diverse patient population.
Working alongside local healthcare professionals, volunteers gain valuable experience while learning about cultural differences, communication and healthcare delivery in Tanzania.
Tengeru Hospital offers a supportive environment where students can grow in confidence, expand their clinical knowledge and make meaningful connections with both staff and patients.

A meaningful learning experience
Our healthcare placements are designed to provide students and healthcare professionals with a unique opportunity to gain international experience while learning about the Tanzanian healthcare system.
To ensure a safe and valuable learning experience for everyone, all participants are expected to follow these guidelines:
- Work under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals at all times.
- Follow the instructions, policies, and procedures of the host hospital or healthcare facility.
- Participate in activities that match your level of education, experience, and competence, as determined by your supervisor.
- Respect the privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of every patient. Taking photos or videos of patients is strictly prohibited unless explicit permission has been granted by both the healthcare facility and the patient.
- Follow all infection prevention measures, safety protocols, and professional standards.
- Show respect towards patients, staff, fellow volunteers, and the local culture.

Education & Childcare
Education is one of the most powerful tools to create opportunities and a brighter future. In Tanzania, many schools work hard to provide children with knowledge, skills, and confidence, but extra support can make a meaningful difference. At Volunteer Travel Experience, our education projects allow volunteers to become part of the local school community. You will work alongside teachers, support children in their learning journey, and experience the daily life of Tanzanian education.
Apple Junior School
Apple Junior School is a welcoming primary school in Arusha where children are encouraged to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. The school provides a supportive learning environment in which education, creativity, and personal development go hand in hand. Future Stars Academy
